I LOVE fashion editorials but its not just the clothes that make them intriguing...it's the model too. Over the years I've had a regular subscription to Vogue and occasionally I buy ELLE and US imports like Nylon, Teen Vogue and American Vogue (which is not nealy as good as British Vogue tbh) so I've become familar with a a few faces. Anyway there are some models who are chameleons and are one minute a 40's screen siren exhaling plumes of smoke from a long cigarette holder and the next they're a grungy, leather-clad beauty queen smashing the shit out of a fender; then there are the models who embody a certain feature or look (kind of like Derek Zoolander-but in a good way). I really fucking love the Soho Doll's music. From "Stripper" to "Shut your pretty mouth" to my personal favourite, "bang bang bang bang", they just have this kind of electro glam sound accompanied with suggestive lyrics that are sung so vulnerably that it's an intoxicating paradox. I've been meaning to post these pictures for ages. Emma Watson: perhaps "shit" is a bit harsh but there's alot lacking when it comes to her performance skills however I'll forgive her because this girl knows how to work, not only an outfit, but the camera when it comes to photoshoots and fashion. I just LOVE the feline-inspired eye make-up and the whole smokey dark eyes, pale lips and Bed-Head hair thing. The clothes are also to die for. I guess it's kind of a marmite thing cause on the plane on the way to Berlin I had this magazine with me and alot of my friends thought she looked awful. Personally I think she looks AMAZING and there's not a trace of that awful shrill straight-laced Hermione in there.

I'm sooooo annoyed! I have been wanting to see this film ever since it was announced that Miss Tautou (One of my favourite actresses) would be stepping into the shoes of the iconic, legendary, petite designer Gabrielle Chanel. I love Chanel, I love Audrey, I love the equisite attention to detail in the cinematography of french cinema BUT Reading, being the corporate, big-budget Blockbuster kind of town that it is will not be showing it. Vue and Showcase aren't going to show it neither are the nearest towns so I guess I'm going have to wait till the dvd release to see this film. I'm not really too keen to watch it online either.

Ok so I've been horribly negligent of my blog for the past week and a few days and among ordering books off amazon, buying jewlerry and hunting down great dresses in charity shops (Wells someone else's trash is my treasure and vice-ersa), working and booking cinema tickets I didn't do alot else due to the un-summer like weather that has been depressing my part of the world and made us all maudlin. I bought this new necklace. You can't really see it from here but it's basically alot of twisted chains and black beads with charms interwovern into it and a vintage-style pendant.

I found this Jus d'Orange dress at a charity shop. It's made of real silk and it feels so nice. It kind of drapes but really beautifully and I never wear that much bold colour so this was a chance to...

I started using those Elvive Nutri-gloss spray stuff and it's made my think hair significantly lighter and a bit more shinier.

I wore this hat for the first time out to a picnic. It was the first time I wore it out in the five years in which I have owned it.

Well that's pretty much it lately. I deeply apologise if you've actually read this blog entry and that I wasted a minute of your life that you will never get back just to fulfill my blog quota but either way thanks for taking time to read it :)

Five days of Danger

So I have been back from Berlin for three days and I'm still buzzed from the whole experience and looking back it all seems a surrealistic blur of political art on walls, stunning views, tear-jerking concentration camp stories, talented street performers, dancing to some really bad tunes and getting inebriated on German beer. Memories that leave a dopey smile on my face. So I'm gonna try to condense my five days in the German capital into this blog entry and post some pictures (only a few, however, as in total I took over 400).

Our first evening was spent touring the Berlin wall art gallery which is some of the best "grafitti" (and I use that word loosely) that I've ever seen. Then after dinner we went down to the hotel bar and each ordered a different beer and sampled each others (that's how we discovered which ones we liked best and that's what also made us slightly sick). Throughout the week we I realised we kept going to all the capitalist places that were familiar to us: H&M, Starbucks, Mcdonalds. To make up for our lack of enthusiasm for real German food (lets face it, as a vegetarian it's not much fun). We "soaked" (quite literally) up the culture through drinks. I was addicted to the red Beliner Weisse which is basically beer with syrup in it (sounds nauseating but it's sooo good), the classic Kolsch beer and then there's Mezzo Mix which is half cola/half orange and helped with the hangovers from previously mentioned drinks. In Germany you can drink beer, lager and cider at 16 but you have to be 18 to drink spirits. I thought it wouldn't matter how much I drunk as someone else was bound to get more drunk than me and I'm not a lightweight at all so I had hoped the attention would never be on me the morning after but of course I was foolish to think that. I love Berlin but it's seriously lacking on the tea front. The coffee drinkers had a great time whenever we'd go to cafes but the tea left a bit to be desired and on the plane ride home there was alot of "When I get home the first thing I'm going to do is make a huge pot of Twinings". However what they lacked in tea they made up for in junk food: doughnuts as big as your head, blocks of assorted flavoured ice cream. incredibly sour sherbet sweets, sourdough cookies, pizza, fries and spicy ketchup.

On Wednesday we visited Sachsenhausen Concentration camp. It was raining that day which I was grateful for as I don't think I would've been able to see it bathed in glorious sunlight and it was an element of pathetic fallacy mirroring our moods to this particular side of German history. The whole thing was very maudlin and I don't know why but what struck me the most was seeing the striped pajamas that they were forced to wear. There was a wall where you could write and leave messages and I left a note as a small token to the impact it had on me. It's a difficult experience but I think everyone should visit a concentration camp in their lifetime. It can make you deeply contemplate the limitations of cruelty that humans can surpass.

The next day we visited beautiful Potsdam which is just outside of Berlin. It's an idyllic quiet town which was overrun by us English students singing "Paparazzi" at the top of our lungs. There are windmills and palaces and markets and grand churches and it's like another world. That night we went to a club and by the end of the night everybody was dancing (including the teachers). I only had three drinks that night (and a damn small cola I spent more than 3 fucking euros on!) as I could not afford to get drunk again both morally and economically. Friday was a sad day as it was our last and we went shopping in Alexander platz. I managed to stretch my last five euros quite far and bought a tiny converse sneaker keyring, a Berlin t-shirt, a coffee & cream eyeliner pencil and some twisted beads.

This may be my last post for a couple of days because as of 3am on Monday morning (what I still consider as Sunday night) I am headed for the German capital of Berlin with my a-level History class. I'm really excited, though a bit annoyed we didn't go last week when it was Berlin fashion week- it's like my school doesn't care about the international fashion schedule(!). I've been to Munich before but never Berlin and it just seems brimming with culture, great music, cool people and definatly an... interesting history. However, we may have the week off school but, despite what SOME people think, it's not a HOLIDAY. My idea of a hoiday is not five days touring museams, memorials and concentration camps and being herded like cattle from one place to another like those poor italian students I see around Reading (only without the orange hoodies) but that won't stop us having a good time and we have most evenings off so it will be cool to explore and I'm going to take loads of pictures and who knows, maybe I'll be inspired.

Ok don't laugh but I've had a new hobby, kind of an addiction, for a while now....a guilty pleasure I don't really feel all that guilty about. Some people watch I love Lucy re-runs, some people secretly read Pippi Longstocking books and some people listen to the soundtrack of Mary Poppins to unwind after a stressful day. I spend my time on Youtube watching 1950's &60's writers, movie stars and musicians (basically the creme-de-le-creme of the society pages back then) on What's My Line. You're probably thinking "What the fuck?" and if you are, let me explain what I understand to be the general format: There is a panel of so-called experts who are blind folded and then a celebrity personality comes out and they ask them Yes/No questions to try to figure out who they are, in which the celebrity must adopt an accent to disguise their natural voise, especially if it's distinctive. It's a fairly simple concept and hugely entertaining and I bless the person/people who have uploaded these archives for us to view. You can find the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Salvador Dali, Sue Lyon, Walt Disney, Ava Gardner, Julie Andrews, Lauren Becall, Natalie Wood, Eleanor Roosenvelt and William Holden, among others but my all time favourite has to be Elizabeth Taylor. Her comedic essence and her natural grace are just bought out so well in this clip...

Today, Michael Mann's latest film, Public Enemies, was released in the UK so naturally I went to see it. I usually buy dvds or watch movies online (and if you saw the prices of cinema tickets nowadays you'd probably think it a wise decision) but every now and then a film comes along where I think, "You'd regret missing the chance to see this on the big screen" and this was one I had my eye on for some time. I mean a Crime/Drama/Thriller starring the tour-de-force that is the beautiful & talented Marion Cottillard in company with the equally talented & handsome Johnny Depp and Christian Bale...this movie screams "MUST SEE!" I didn't know all that much about John Dillinger prior to this film to be perfectly honest so, even though it's not a biopic, I can't assess how much is fiction and how much is historical fact but that doesn't deter from the fact that this was a superbly crafted cat-and-mouse drama with an excellent soundtrack. The camera work was slightly poor but the acting was no less than powerful to make up for it. I was nervous, initially, about Cotillard's Academy-Award winning performance skills to be wasted as just the "token female" but her role really progressed and, especially towards the end, she became a vital part of the plot. Bale, I mean goes without saying that he was excellent as the determined agent Melvin Pervis and last but not at all least is the living legend that is Mr Johnny Depp. Now I'm not someone who worships him but I can't deny that his body of work, his filmography, is pretty damn impressive. He has that rare ability to carry and command the screen like a leading man but is still an excellent character actor with tremendous range that applies himself to every single role 110% and it damn well pays off, especially as the notorious bank robber John. The relationships between the characters were well structured, especially between John and Cotillard's character, Billie, who's relationship is driven by real love and it's actually believable. Add some nailbiting suspenseful moments and some easy humour and you got a film which is not too shabby. Really reccomend this film. xoxoxox

I am in love with this dress. It's a work of art by the genius that is, Elie Saab. If you go on the Vogue website and use the magnifying tool then you cen see what I mean. It looks like broken glass or a mosaic and looks very structured but is actually made out of drapey soft fabric. I'm almost certain this will spark an optical illusions revolution in the fashion world in years to come. xoxoxo

Now that Mad Men is between seasons there is a void in my life that needs to be filled with retro advertising and luckily there's my new favourite cosmetics range: Soap & Glory. I discovered them only last year when I was looking for a lip colour that will double as a plumper so I could attempt to acheive that Angelina Jolie effect. Enter Sexy Mother Pucker which smells great, looks great and, more importantly, works. This led me to discover a whole range of products with tounge-in-cheek names like Glow Job and The Greatest Scrub of All... and I have been seduced by the packaging. It's enough to make me want to don a girdle, put my hair in pin curls and talk in a breathy American acccent.

I love it when fashion stories adopt a timeless story and the clothes are inspired by them. Some of my favourites have been Keira Knightley as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and Rachel Weisz as Snow White, both for a shoot with American Vogue. The whimsical and quirky Roald Dahl-inspired shoot in Vogue '08. Then also Alice in Wonderland which provides an endless source on inspiration and has been reworked in Vogue Italia with Amanda Seyfried last year and Natalia Vodianova in 2003 with various designers cameo-ing as the various wierd and wonderful characters. Something that has a great narrative and is an interpretation inspired by something that's already so great.

I didn't really anticipate to write about "sensitive" issues when I started this blog but I feel the need to right now. You're probably reading this thinking, "What an ignorant little girl. She doesn't know what the fuck she's talking about. Aw, she wants peace! What a worthless dreamer!" and maybe I am just re-iterating what thousands have said before me but that doesn't make my belief of these words any less stronger. I was browsing the internet today and mostly I find some really inspiring things on other people's blogs but I stumbled across a group blog which incited racial hatred and encouraged division through the use of photoshopped propaganda but what surprised me was that it wasn't written by pathetic lowly idiots but by educated respected men- it makes you contemplate the value of an education if you are disciplined to rationalise and come out with child-like grudges and impose them on others? Now, I'm all for freedom of speech but when it's purpose is to infuse prejudices among us and encourage us from distancing ourselves from a particular race, nationality or religion then I think that's an abuse of our rights. These are rights that some people do not have and that we take for granted. It upset me greatly seeing this particular website (I won't say what it is because I don't want to promote their bullshit) and seeing it makes it easy to lose all faith in humanity but if I look at my country for example. Britain is multi-cultural (like many other countries) and I wouldn't have it any other way. Most people acknowledge this and over the years it has helped Britain become more tolerant and understanding. I would hate for us to turn on each other that all because of people like this re-igniting old feuds and using the crisis in the Middle East as a metaphor to parallel any situation around the world. When there's so many internal problems for the people in places like Iran, China, Tibet and the Phillipines, is it really necessary to spark a division between humanity all because of some people's old grudges? I will end by saying this: No matter what their "Grander Scheme" is, it is NEVER necessary to acheive this through the loss of human lives and innocent bloodshed.

I'm a british 17 year old girl so it is inevitable that I shop at Topshop. My most recent purchase has been this leaf-print tunic with a sweetheart neckline and a red satchel which I love because it's a striking contrast to the muted tones of the rest of the outfit. However to complete my ensemble I really want this grey leather jacket. I have many leather jackets but they're all black and for summer I really want to keep wearing leather jackets but in a colour that won't absorb more heat, plus the smudgy grey is bee-yoo-ti-ful. I haven't bought shoes in a while and I tend to be realistic and acknowledge that my feet can't tolerate heels so I want to buy these blue studded pumps which I think are super cute xoxoxo

Drugs, Jazz and...Poetry?

I have literally just finished reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac and man, I was NOT expecting that. I mean when a novel gets high praise from the likes of Bob Dylan you expect it to deliver but this went above and beyond. I don't think I've ever been so compelled by a book (well I have but it's a small minority). Initially, kind of cynically, I dismissed it as just another gang banging, dope smoking, angsty road trip-discovering-bohemian-America story but what set this apart was that it wasn't just skittering on the surface and it had depths beneath the depths that it plunged and the characters weren't just chasing after idle amusements but were adventurous and yearned to discover and experience. It's kind of a roman a' clef (real life accounts under a facade of fiction). In fact Kerouac wanted to keep it autobiographical but the yuppie ccorporate scum publishers forced him to change the names so our protagonists Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady become Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty as they discover the underground Chicago Jazz scene, are introduced to the Mexican culture through the use of mambo music and underage prostitutes and start hallucinating and talking in verse as a result of the marijuana. The whole thing was intoxicating and beautiful and really makes you contemplate the "American Dream". Lust Object: Missoni playsuit

Ok so anyone who knows me will probably know that I have been lusting after a playsuit/jumpsuit for some time now. Ever since the weather started getting warmer (which was short lived, sadly) I have wanted one and I found a navy printed one in Primark which will do for the time being but the one that really caught my eye was this missoni one that Blake Lively wore..Speaking of Gossip Girl stars, I'm also madly in love with this dress Leighton Meester wore last year. It's a 1950's shape but modernised with an asymetrical strap and she looks stunning with that hair and the shoes are classic

I think the english must have Earl Grey running through their veins instead of blood. The amount of tea we drink is quite laughable. My taste buds aren't sophisticated enough to enjoy coffee and even on the tea front I can't keep down fruit tea, mint tea or green tea (I discovered this after a violent rejection to some in Morroco a few years ago) but I never say no to a good ole cup o' PG Tips with a bit of milk and lots of sugar. Whenever one of my friends is upset or whenever I'm feeling maudlin there always seems to be tea involved in the healing process (I know what you're thinking, we're oh-so Rock n' Roll). Most of the time all we're drinking is stained hot water but as Benjamin BUtton says: "Where I come from, folks just like it to be hot". Amen to that.

Things to do when you have severe insomnia

If it's 3am and the Diphenhydramine HCI (standard over-the-counter sleep aids) is not working then just take pearls of wisdom from my bitter experiences and kill time in the follwoing ways...

1. Read every magazine you own-even if it's packed with last season's clothes- and read all the articles about the dangers of eyebrow shaping even though you couldn't give a shit, it might come in handy one day.
2. Try on all your clothes and customise the puffyness of your 1950's floral prom dress and even though you just bought two new dresses and a shirt silently complain that you have nothing to wear the next day.
3. Try to watch all those episodes of "The Big Bang theory" online that you've been meaning to watch for ages.
4. Experiment with every lip colour you own and mix them in a palette
5. Draw on your dressing room mirror in lipstick
6. Attempt to do any homework you have to do (yeah, right!)
7. DON'T go on msn- it just reminds you that the rest of the world is sleeping and it's just you and those annoying robot contacts like Smarterchild
8. Watch Moulin Rouge
9. Re-watch the "Roxanne" tango from Moulin Rouge
10. Use your curling iron to make tight ringlets in your hair...but they only go wavy the next morning I suppose.
11. Cut out old magazines and make collages
12. Try to make fairy cakes in the kitchen without waking everyone
13. Make lots and lots of mix CD's and playlists on itunes for the soundtrack of the movie that you aspire to make.
14. Look up who made the Best Dressed lists on Vogue.com
15. Think serioously about writing a novel. Then laugh at the fact that you ever thought you had the discipline to accomplish something like that.

So if you ever have insomnia you got 15 ways to kill time before the sunlight streams in through your windows and you get even more depressed cause it's time for school and no amount of concealer in the world can hide those bags under your eyes. I realise it would be more constructive to let you know how to make insomnia go away so you're actually able to sleep but believe me, if I knew that I wouldn't bother about fiiguring out ways to pass the time. I guess If worse comes to worst start reading "War and Peace" by Tolstoy. I get that it's this huge literary masterpiece but man, it's a snooze-fest.

I get fascinated with different people for a period of time. Right now it's Harry Houdini, Clara Bow and Charlie Chaplin. Last month it was Carla Bruni and Sylvia Plath...tomorrow it might be Mark Ronson and Woody Allen or Amelia Earhart...but I move on. I always do.

I've recently been addicted to that tune but the video has made me all kinds of nostalgic too. It reminded me of No Doubt's video for "It's My Life"...y'know with Gwen rocking the 40's movie star look, reminiscent of Barbara Stanwyck, as she plays a murderous femme fatale killing off her three bandmates. This got me thinking about No Doubt in general. Now, I'm a child of the nineties born in 91 so I may not have hit double figures when No Doubt were in their prime but my appreciation for their ska-influenced songs is no less. I'm just a girl, Hella Good, Ex girlfriend, Don't Speak, Hey Baby, Bathwater...all brilliant songs that are a crucial part of my life's soundtrack. Now there's "Stand & Deliver" which is just awesome and hits you from the first listen. It's a cover of the Adam & the Ants and it's new but it carries all the old sounds of ND that we love so much. If you're a Gossip Girl fan you would have heard this in the episode "Valley Girls". If you're not, then you missed out but it's ok cause I got a clip of a live performance with Haley Williams from Paramore right here. I will just end by saying if you don't like No Doubt then you're a snob. End of. xoxoxo
